Fantasy EPL Preview – Game week 23

Published by DSAdmin on January 26, 2009

With the transfer window closing in just over a week, the next few days were always going to be busy for Premier teams but with a full midweek card of games, there is barely going to be a spare moment for managers, players, fans and fantasy players alike.

One of the transfers that has already taken place this window has been the move of Emile Heskey from Wigan to Aston Villa.  Although Heskey has never been a striker to threaten the top of the goal scoring, his style of play has always made him a favoured partner of a lot of the strikers he has played alongside.  Heskey seemed to bring the best out in Michael Owen and he also had a hand in Amir Zaki’s blistering start to life in England.  Now back under the tutelage of Martin O’Neill, Heskey may be the man to inspire Gabby Abonglahor to even greater feats in front of goal which could be a great reason to bring in the young Villa striker to your fantasy team.  With games coming up away to struggling Portsmouth and then at Villa Park against Heskey’s former club Wigan, this new partnership may just be the one to secure Villa’s place in the top four.

Given the ultimately fruitless chase for Kaka, it is easy to forget that Manchester City signed Craig Bellamy and if the striker can stay fit, he is sure to be amongst the goals in the latter half of the season.  Manager Mark Hughes knows how to get the best out of Bellamy, having worked with him for Wales and Blackburn Rovers and with the midfield line-up that City have at their disposal, there should be a steady supply of chances coming the way of Bellamy.  The Welsh striker has always relied on pace and making intelligent runs and now that he has players the likes of Robinho, Ireland and Wright Phillips supplying him, Bellamy could be ready to repay punters faith in him with a healthy reply of goals.  Games at home to Newcastle and away to Stoke may be just what the striker needs to get his City career off to a flier and perhaps help move the club away from the relegation dogfight and into top half of the table security.

At this time of the year, it is hard to confidently predict too many players who will be playing in their next few games as the transfer window means it can all change so quickly.  Two players who probably aren’t going anywhere though are Chelsea’s Frank Lampard and Michael Ballack and given that Chelsea’s forwards cant be bothered scoring at the moment, its just as well for the Blues.  Stunning free-kicks and long rangers are the order of the day when these two push forward and if Chelsea have any hope of maintaining their title challenge, these two will be key men in the weeks to come and could be of note for all managers, not just Big Phil Scolari.
