EPL transfer window – closed
Published by DSAdmin on February 5, 2009
The EPL transfer window finally closed with a flurry of activity that brings about some interesting moves in the 2009 EPL transfer window.
Emile Heskey finds himself reunited with his mentor Martin O’Neill through a 3.5M Pound purchase that saw Wigan send the burly striker over to Aston Villa in a move that provides Aston Villa with a formidable strike tandem of the talented Gabby Agbonlahor and Emile Heskey. Although already 31, Heskey figures to get plenty of time on the pitch as Villa try and fight for a place in the top four in the EPL as well as try and advance in their current European campaign. Heskey has always flourished in the role of a provider and hardworking partner to a fleet footed and talented finisher (a la Michael Owen) and I’m sure Aston Villa are hoping for the same with his new partnership.
With Heskey moving on from Wigan, Steve Bruce secured a loan deal for Middlesbrough’s Egyptian midfielder Mido. Maybe Wigan is hoping that there’s some sort of Egyptian connection between Mido and Zaki that may spark Wigan to a better run of form.
Hull City snagged Jimmy Bullard from Fullham for a club record fee of 5M pounds. Bullard will no doubt slide right into the midfield with a license to roam and hopefully improve the level of Hull’s play.
The last couple of days in the transfer window saw some more big cash splashed around as some surprising moves were finalized.
After just a few futile months at Liverpool (a move which must be considered a complete and utter bust), Robbie Keane is back at White Hart Lane. Hopefully Keane has more success than the pitiful 5 league goals in 19 games he managed for Liverpool. With Defoe out for the next couple of months it appears as though Keane will pair either Darren Bent or Roman Pavlyuchenko in leading the front line for Tottenham.
Another move that has been on the horizon for a while was finalized as Arsenal got the man they’ve been chasing in Andrei Arshavin. The Russian was a force at Euro 2008 and was instrumental in Russia’s run to the semis where they lost to eventual champs Spain. Arshavin is sorely needed as the Gunners are injury stricken with Fabregas and Rosicky out. Arshavin has enjoyed a good goal scoring career at Zenit St. Petersburg (51 goals over a 10 year career), and Arsenal are banking that the 27 year old will adapt quickly to the English game and jump on a goal scoring track.
Big Phil finally pulled off a move that Jose Mourinho should have when he was boss at Chelsea, by signing Portuguese winger Ricardo Quaresma to a loan deal from Inter Milan. Although struggling at Inter, Quaresma is a wealth of talent and Chelsea is assuming that being paired with his national team boss Big Phil Scolari will be all that he needs to find his way in the EPL. With Joe Cole injured, Quaresma is the ideal replacement as a creative attacking player that Chelsea needs coming down the wings as they try to unseat Manchester United atop the EPL standings, and forage their way in Europe.

Keane was garbage at Liverpool. Will be interesting to see how Arshavin adapts to the EPL.

Quaresma to Chelsea is the most exciting move of this transfer season. He has no option but to revitalize his catatonic career under the auspices of Big Phil and score some goalaaaso’s. Shades of his dominance over Christiano, as in the Sporting days are waiting to be realized for the dude!
