What Chelsea can expect from Quaresma
Published by DSAdmin on February 6, 2009
As Ricardo Quaresma completed his transfer from Inter Milan on transfer deadline day (recap of EPL Transfers here), one has to wonder which Quaresma is going to show up for Chelsea.
The highly gifted winger has often drawn comparisons to his Portuguese compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo whilst at the same time drawing the ire of most others for being a lazy, selfish player who cares more about how pretty his footwork and skills are rather than the state of his team or the game that they are trying to win. It was probably the selfish, lazy Quaresma that the Great One saw, because Quaresma didn’t make the cut for Jose Mourinho’s Internazionale squad for the knock-out phase of the Champions League. In fact, this is what Mourinho had to say about Quaresma after Inter’s match against Torino, “He is a player that I wanted in Milan but, unfortunately, he has not been able to overcome the criticism directed at him. Without confidence in oneself, it becomes more difficult.” Sounds like the Great One didn’t have confidence in Quaresma’s mental attitude let alone his game on the pitch.
The Chelsea faithful are no doubt singing the praises of the talented winger they’ve scooped up at the transfer deadline, singing his praises and already proclaiming him the replacement to the injured Joe Cole in the Blues midfield. Let’s not jump on that bandwagon just yet, it is going to take Quaresma some time to adjust to the English game and it is quite improbable that he will be able to step right in and shine in the EPL spotlight.
No doubt Big Phil Scolari and his coaching staff do view Quaresma as the type of winger that can offer them width and creativity in the absence of Joe Cole who’se knee ligament injury is going to keep him out for the rest of the season. Chelsea need a boost after their loss to Liverpool and as they attempt to close the five point deficit that Manchester United has eked out over them in the EPL standings.
Hopefully Big Phil can convince Quaresma that while the skill he possesses with the outside of his feet are enviable, he’s more effective actually attacking the defense and delivering telling balls.

Potentially he could be a class act for them, but he’s always struck me as a player who needs to be the focus of the team. He’s rarely shone for Portugal and after being the big fish in a small pond at Porto, he went to Inter and failed to impress there. He has the talent to make it at Chelsea, but I wonder if his mindset is right for the club.
