Fantasy Football – We Want Goals
Published by Andrew Reilly on February 18, 2009
Most clubs get a positive response when a new manager comes in, Portsmouth proved this last week when they defeated Manchester City after Tony Adams was sacked so it could be a wise decision to recall some of the Chelsea stars to your starting line-up. Nicolas Anelka fired home a late hat-trick in the FA Cup when caretaker boss Ray Wilkins was in charge but the away match to Aston Villa sees Guus Hiddink take control. Villa are riding high in the league but are struggling for goals at the moment so a Chelsea defender may be a good shout for a clean sheet or maybe Drogba or Anelka will stop sulking long enough to score a decisive goal. Villa had a tough battle in the Uefa Cup this week so Chelsea should be fresher for this early Saturday match-up.
Elsewhere, the match between Middlesboro and Wigan could offer the away side some joy and perhaps allow Egyptian hit-man Amir Zaki to get back to goal scoring ways. The forward took the Premier League by storm in the opening months of the season but the goals have dried up of late. Boro sit second from bottom and pressure is mounting on boss Gareth Southgate with the crowd getting extremely anxious. Wigan boss Steve Bruce knows this is the sort of fixture that his team should be securing three points from so expect the Latics to press forward at every opportunity. Zaki or his fellow countryman Mido will be the more likely forward to do the damage come Saturday afternoon.
Two goals in his comeback match against Cardiff City should have seen Eduardo feature against Sunderland in his Premier League comeback at the weekend but a hamstring injury has ruled him out once again. This may give Niklas Bendtner one final chance to show Arsene Wenger that he is the man to fire the Gunners up the league. He may not have the overall talent expected of an Arsenal striker but surely the motivation for Bendtner to play well has never been higher.
Newcastle haven’t had the best of times of late and with Shay Given gone and Joe Kinnear out of action for a while, looking to their opponents to notch a goal or two isn’t the worst tactic a manager could deploy at the moment. Everton travel to St James Park on a great run of form and will be in confident mood to overturn the Magpies. Whether you fancy Tim Cahill to pop up at the back post to score a header, Mikel Arteta to drive home another wonder strike from distance or loan forward Jo to continue the goal scoring form of his debut, the addition of any attack minded player from the Toffees could bring a reward.
This weekends matches in the Premier League give the impression that there could be a lot of goals to enjoy so place a focus on the attackers who are likely to do the business as opposed to the defenders who will be battling hard to stop them.

Hopefully Zaki can get his goal scoring touch back.

I agree with the Bendtner comment, he seems to think an awful lot of himself the player, but he needs to back that up with goals. At the moment he just looks like a poor man’s Peter Crouch.
