Bellamy guns for ex-club again

Published by Andrew Reilly on February 26, 2009

With weekend and midweek games to look forward to, the English Premier League is gearing up for the business end of the season and the same can be said for Fantasy Football. The right selection going into this double header could rocket your team up the standings.

Ex-players returning to their former clubs sometimes have an added incentive to play well and Craig Bellamy has been a thorn in the side of many of his former clubs this season. To be fair, Craig Bellamy has played for a lot of clubs so he gets more opportunity to play against former employees but his recent goal at Anfield was the latest for the Welsh hitman. Next in his sights are West Ham United, his club until the January transfer window. City have a terrible run of form away from home so they may not have enough to beat a West Ham team, who have been struggling of late but there is every chance that Bellamy could notch a goal.

The fixtures look bleak for West Bromwich Albion who travel to Everton on Saturday and then welcome Arsenal to the Hawthorns on Tuesday evening. The Baggies will be facing an Everton side that will be without Mikel Arteta for the remainder of the season, so if Arteta is in your squad, replace him now. How they readjust to the loss of the Spaniard is an interesting matter but Everton should be strong enough to sneak a victory, perhaps with Jo furthering his chances of a permanent transfer in the summer.

Anyone looking for the big four for easy points should always remember that it is harder to predict the outcome of matches after Champions League fixtures. Perhaps its tiredness or perhaps there is a mental comedown for the players but it would not be a surprise if there were some surprising points dropped in the upcoming week. On paper, Arsenal should be good for six points but on Saturday, face a Fulham side who have been far more resilient on their travels this season and could have Andy Johnson back from injury. Arsenal, who needed a penalty for their only goal against Roma, have had four draws in a row, the last three being goalless so a defender on show at the Emirates may be a good selection to pick up points.

With Manchester United on League Cup final action this weekend against Tottenham, Liverpool and Chelsea know they can narrow the gap with wins but they too will be wary about how they bounce back after their midweek exploits. The fitness of Fernando Torres once again becomes an issue after the striker limped off in the Bernabeu with an ankle knock. With games on Saturday and Tuesday, the Spanish striker may not be risked at the Riverside, which will leave Liverpool worryingly short of strikers. It is slightly ironic that this weekend Robbie Keane will be sitting cooling his heels as he is cup-tied for the League Cup final but even if he was still at Liverpool, there is no guarantee he would be selected. Steven Gerrard made his Liverpool comeback in the victory over Real Madrid but whether he will be risked this weekend is another matter.

Hopefully Gerrard won’t play, can’t afford to buy him back!

It is virtually impossible to second guess Benitez and who he will pick. Infuriating manager but he knows how to play in Europe!
