Upset of the day?

Published by Ian John on September 26, 2009

After midweek Carling Cup exploits, the focus returns to the EPL this weekend with all the big names in action in what promises to be an interesting day with, perhaps, just the potential of an upset for one of the top sides.

Leaders Chelsea travel to Wigan to take on Roberto Martinez charges in a game which should not pose too many problems for Carlo Ancelotti’s all conquering blues. Martinez side started the season well with a fine win over Aston Villa, but have struggled for consistency since and it is hard to make a case for them taking anything from this game.

Also set for the points look to be Liverpool who have, on paper, a relatively straightforward encounter at home to Hull City, although Hull did manage a 2-2 draw at Anfield last season. Reds boss Rafa Benitez will know that this is a game that Liverpool need to win, and win well against Phil Brown’s out of sorts side, if they are to have any chance ot title success this season.

Manchester United face a short trip down the M6 to Stoke to take on Tony Pulis men. Last season a late Carlos Tevez goal was enough to hand United victory and while this looks like being a tough game again today against a Stoke side who have started the season well, United should have enough to take the victory.

The toughest task today looks to be for Arsenal, who head to Fulham to face the tough test of Fulham. Craven Cottage has become something of a jinxed ground for the top sides in recent times and Arsene’s men could well face a real test today. It wouldn’t surprise me if Fulham got something from this one.

With Aston Villa travelling to Ewood Park to take on Blackburn and Tottenham facing Burnley at White Hart Lane, this could well be a defining weekend in the Premier League, where the top sides put a little distance between themselves and those in the bottom half.

Or it could be the weekend when everything starts to even itself out…

Your thoughts?

Tough break for Stoke, but Man United will fall to Wolfsburg in the CL. Shades of Lille’s famed destruction of Man United circa 2005…wait this isn’t a CL post! Good to see Bramble scoring goals, helps eradicate the memories of his Newcastle days. Mannone is proving to be a great resource for Wenger after some great saves to keep Fulham at bay. Howard was fantastic as well. The same unfortunately cannot be said about Jensen. Looking forward to Chelsea/Liverfool next week.

I would think that Wigan beating Chelsea would count as a big upset.
The fact that Titus Bramble scored a thumping header, is unfathomable and I am kicking my self thoroughly for dropping him on my fantasy squad.
