Fantasy Fantastic?

Published by Ian John on October 2, 2009

How is your fantasy season going? Yeah. Mine too. But as a new weekend dawns, the hopes of a lengthy list of fantasy team managers are once again lifted, as their charges take to the field to hopefully earn them the points to move them up the fantasy table.

The big game of the weekend sees Liverpool take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. It’s hard to see Fernando Torres racking up the points like he did last week, even so the form he is means he is hard to overlook for your team. Didier Drogba seems to have the measure of Liverpool and if he isn’t already a starter in your team, then he is well worthy of consideration for this game, especially up against Liverpool’s leaky defence. It’s also worth remembering that Peter Cech is suspended for this one, with Hilario set to take over in goal.

With Manchester United having a home game with Sunderland, it looks like being another profitable weekend for United’s defenders and goalkeeper. Midfielder Darren Fletcher has been in inspirational form of late (I know, I added him to my squad) and is good value in many leagues.

Some of the lesser lights of the Premier League may get to shine this weekend. With Burnley facing Birmingham and Wolves taking on Portsmouth any of the Clarets or Wolves players, who perhaps are usually on the bench, could be worthy of consideration. Wade Elliot for Burnley in particular and those who invested in striker Matin Paterson may be hoping he picks up a goal or two against Birmingham, who look set to be without both Christian Benitez and James McFadden. Wolves fans will be hoping Kevin Doyle’s goalscoring run will continue against a lacklustre and probably demotivated Portsmouth, whose players haven’t even been paid this week.

Wigan will hope to follow up their fine win over Chelsea last weekend with a win from their trip to Hull. Phil Brown’s men apparently saved a woman from throwing herself off the Humber Bridge earlier this week, some have wondered, unkindly, if Brown offering to tend his resignation may have persuaded her down from the ledge, but it is a game Hull must take something from if they are to stand a chance of survival. Watch out for a big game from Stephen Hunt in midfield.

Tottenham’s goalscoring feats could continue at Bolton were an unhappy Gary Megson, ill at ease with not only Bolton fans, but seemingly any fan, will have to inspire his side on to a solid performance against Harry Redknapp’s men. However the pace in Spurs counter attack may prove too much and expect Jermaine Defoe to be back amongst the goals.

Sunday sees three more games with Arsenal at home to Blackburn, Thomas Vermaelen and Robin Van Persie stand out in this game. Everton take on Stoke and the Toffeemen are in good form, if you have an Everton striker who is fit in your squad, or Tim Cahill, they look a useful bet. West Ham face a London derby against Fulham that looks set to be a low scoring affair in my view. Any Hammers or Fulham defenders may be worth considering.

On Monday Villa take on Man City in an enthralling clash at Villa Park. It’s hard to see defences being on top in this match up of two attacking giants and any of City or Villa’s attacking players, or wide midfielders, look good for inclusion in your team.

Now all we have to do is wait for all these predictions to be proved absolutely wrong!

Going to be an interesting weekend. Was thinking of picking up Giggs, given his form, but not sure if he’s going to actually play this weekend. Im sure most fantasy managers have both Chelsea and Liverpool defenders in their squads, here’s to hoping that its going to be a goal-fest, and that Drogba gets most of them :)

I think picking up ManU or Arsenal players for this weekend is a good thing!
