£34m Ribery linked with City and other transfer gossip…

Published by Ian John on October 22, 2009

The closure of the transfer window until January often has football writers waiting for that juicy snippet of information about a potential transfer looming for Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Man City, Tottenham, etc etc. Often the problem is sorting the wheat from the chaff, the genuine rumours from those that have come from the fevered imagination of a sports hack. Here’s a quick recap of some of the best, and worst, rumours that have been circulating in the past few weeks, make of them what you will come January.

Manchester United : have been linked with Manuel Neuer, Igor Akinfeev, Julio Cesar, Rui Patricio and David James of late. In addition to the goalkeeping glut, Sir Alex is also reportedly weighing up a move for David Silva in January, though with Valencia’s good start to the season, that may scupper the move. The Red Devils have also been linked with a move for Inter right back Maicon as well as Fiorentina’s young starlet Stevan Jovetic.

Arsenal : Gunners fans may wonder if it is out with the new and in with the old if press rumours are to be believed. Apparently Real Madrid and Barcelona (not to mention Man City) want Cesc Fabregas and are willing to pay a kings ransom to get him. Arsene meanwhile wants to sign…Patrick Viera from Inter. Why? Just to confirm this is the silly season Emmanuel Eboue was linked with a move to Barcelona, which surely is the daftest transfer rumour of the closed window period thus far.

Chelsea : The blues are banned from transfering anyone otherwise it is a fair bet that manager Carlo Ancelotti would be eyeing up a few Milan stars. My money would be on Pirlo and Pato when the embargo is finally lifted.

Manchester City : Always a good laugh to see who City are supposed to be buying. At the last count it was Frank Ribery for £34m and £20m for Maicon and they’ve also declared their interest for Cesc Fabregas and David Bentley(!). I mean why not go the whole hog and add Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Fernando Torres, Frank Lampard and Ace Ventura Pet Detective to the list?

Liverpool : Liverpool’s situation is odd. Not so long ago, they were so poor they had barely enough crumbs in the cookie jar to feed a church mouse. Then suddenly the club is flooded with cash and in great financial shape. As such the club has been linked with Emile Heskey, Carlton Cole, Nilton, David Silva, Goran Pandev and pretty much anyone who can replace Gerrard or Torres. This of course is totally dependent on Senor Benitez keeping his position at the club given their horror form of late.

Tottenham : Harry is seldom out of the transfer news and is believed to be, according to the press, interested in taking striker Adriano on a free, midfielder Sandro for £14m and he is also set to go back to Portsmouth (Yes AGAIN) for keeper David James. Oh and you can add to the list as being of interest to Spurs, Anton Ferdinand, Nigel Reo Coker, Michael Johnson, Sulley Muntari and Klaas Jan Huntelaar.

It’s difficult to say which, of any, of these deals will actually happen. However it’s safe to say that by the time January rolls around, several more players will have been added to each teams list.
