The Tuesday Troll : Old Trafford star faces axe?

Published by Ian John on October 27, 2009

Every Tuesday from now on until the very end of time, I shall troll through the pit of self-righteousness that is the tabloid soccer news and bring you the best bits, or the worst, in my own inimitable and understated style.

First up this week is the news that Sir Alex Ferguson has finally grown tired of Rio Ferdinand’s performances and several papers are reporting that the England man faces the axe, initially from Manchester United but with a knock on effect for his place in the England squad. This is a story that has been brewing for several weeks now and while Ferdinand’s form is poor, it would have more credibility if it weren’t for the fact that Nemanja Vidic is likely to be suspended for at least one game. Would Fergie change both centre backs at once? He will do tonight against Barnsley but for Blackburn, it may be a different matter.

Speaking of Blackburn, poor defending may not be Fergie’s main concern when United take on Rovers at Old Trafford at the weekend. Big Sam Allardyce has revealed that his squad is stricken with swine flu and is blaming the FA should the contagion spread throughout the Premier League. One wonders if United fans will be taking surgical masks instead of beachballs to the game at the weekend.

Fernando Torres has revealed that he was forced to shoot at the near post in the game with United because his groin injury made it painful for him to shoot across goal. He fully admitted that he was nowhere near fit enough for the game but with the help of a jab, was able to struggle through the game. Still it was enough to turn Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic to jelly. God help them had he been fit.

Manchester United have been linked with yet another goalkeeper to add to the growing list. You can add the name of Villarreal keeper Diego Lopez to the list of “potential goalkeeper signings” at Old Trafford in the January transfer window. I think it would be shorter to list the goalkeepers that United haven’t been linked with over the past few months than those that they have.

Robinho is delighted that Barcelona continue to show an interest because it is “easier to be the best player in the world at Barcelona, than at City” and there is always the notion that at Barcelona he can switch off on away games and let players like Lionel Messi and Thierry Henry do the work, while he sits in his deckchair and lights a cigar. The wide eyed Brazilian has a flagrant cheek that outstrips his talent sadly. No wonder Mark Hughes wants to get rid. Perhaps somebody should tell Robinho that to be the worlds best player, you actually have to work at it, not just sign for a big club and expect the status to be granted to you because you can do two step overs, score a goal now and then and earn a telephone number salary. He isn’t the best striker at Manchester City, let alone the world. I doubt many City fans would want Robinho over Bellamy at the moment, so there’s your starting point Robby. Only Bellamy and about 500 others to overtake before you get to Messi…
