The Premier League Top Ten Countdown!
Published by Ian John on November 1, 2009
Hello Pop Pickers, it’s this week’s Premier League top ten, and here’s the rundown of the songs that are making the pop parade top ten this week!
10. “Every Loser Wins” : Portsmouth FC with Nick Berry : After a terrible start to the season, Paul Hart’s men followed up their 4-0 Carling Cup success over Stoke City with another thumping 4-0 victory over Roberto Martinez Wigan Athletic at Fratton Park. This caps a decent week on the field for Paul Hart’s men and gives them real hope of closing the gap on the teams above them in the Premier League table.
9. “Missing You” : Rafa Benitez with John Waite : With Steven Gerrard still unfit and looking likely to be so for some time, Fernando Torres struggling for fitness and Liverpool’s season fast disappearing down the plug hole, Rafa’s soulful classic makes sad reading for Liverpool fans who began the season in such hope, but who now know that a win in Lyon on Wednesday followed by a win against Birmingham on Monday is the only way they can save their dismal season, and they may have to do that without both their prized assets.
8. “We Built This City” : Mark Hughes with Starship : The Welshman still remains in the top ten with this eighties classic. His new charges doing him proud as Man City remain firmly in the race for the title, though they could do with turning a few of their recent draws into wins.
7. “Money’s Too Tight to Mention : Portsmouth’s board with Simply Red : Mick Hucknall takes off his Manchester United shirt to pen this classic with Pompey’s new owners who are now facing a shortfall of £50m just to pay the players that they have on their books this season. A new “John Barnes is Bankrupt” remix will be available shortly.
6. “The Whole Town is Laughing at Me” : Mike Ashley & Teddy Pendergast : The Newcastle supremo announced this week that he isn’t selling, is investing £20m into the club and that manager Chris Hughton, who has left them to the top of the Championship table, will be made a permanent appointment. This elevated Ashley’s popularity in Newcastle so much that he is now just public enemy number one and only loathed by every single Newcastle fan who has ever existed. Result!
5. “Fattie Bum Bum” : Sir Alex Ferguson, Alan Wiley and The Diversions : Sir Alex’s erstwhile tribute to the unfit referee has landed him in hot water with the FA officials who have ummed and aaahed and decided that they are not going to stand for this kind of lack of respect any longer and are going to hit him with a terrifying 30 second ban from being on the touchline, suspended for twenty minutes.
4. “Jailhouse Rock” : Marlon King with Elvis Presley : The Wigan striker has been sacked, been found guilty of sexual assault and actual bodily harm and been rightly banged up to serve his sentence. This classic from Elvis somehow seems fitting and deserving. No appeals allowed.
3. “We gotta get out of this place” : Emile Heskey, Andrea Dossena, Roman Pavlyuchenko & The Animals : With Emile Heskey, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Andrea Dossena’s worries about their world cup places, the trio of stars have lit up the charts with their version of the 1960′s Animals hit.
2. “Land of Confusion” : Liverpool with Genesis : Half of the Reds fans want Rafa gone, half want him to stay, half say he is at fault, half say it’s the boards fault. Half say their season is still going. Half say it’s over before its begun. Are Torrs and Gerrard fit? Why is Carragher’s form so bad? Has anybody seen £20m Alberto Aquilani? Who’s stolen all their strikers?
1. “That’s Amore!” : Carlo Ancelotti with Dean Martin : “When you’re leading the pack and Joe Cole comes back, That’s amore… When your top of the heap and no player is cheap, that’s amore… When Carlo picks teams that fulfils your dreams, that’s amore!”
