The Tuesday Troll : Benitez will quit if Torres is sold.
Published by Ian John on November 17, 2009
I think yesterday was the most boring day in the history of football. Nothing even vaguely interesting happened. No seriously, until George Burley was given the heave-ho later on in the evening, I think it was the most uninteresting 24 hours football has ever witnessed. The most captivating story being that ex-Manchester City and Aston Villa star Darius Vassell had been kicked out of his Turkish hotel for non-payment of bills by his club. I don’t know about you but that is hardly likely to set my pulse racing.
A quick troll through the stories of the past week backs this up. We are told this morning that Rafa Benitez will quit Liverpool if the club (i.e, the chairmen) sell Fernando Torres from under his nose. While Rafa claims he doesn’t foresee this happening, him being adamant he will quit will probably not unduly concern the chairmen anyway, not given his rather expensive new contract and the fact the team have started the season like lame ducks.
Manchester City meanwhile look set to try and land Manchester United target Angel Di Maria. Even if this doesn’t happen I can still imagine the joy unconfined of city fans who every time they hear their rivals linked with a big name player, know that Mark Hughes can come in, add a zero onto the price offered and really chuff off Sir Alex.
Tottenham’s defensive problems, with injury prone duo Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate, being joined recently by Spurs Fall Guy Carlo Cudicini, means Harry Redknapp is being linked with a move for both Manchester United’s number 3 and England number 1, the unhappy Ben Foster as well as West Ham’s Matthew Upson. Liverpool meanwhile are reportedly set to be offered Yaya Toure and £20m for Javier Mascherano by Barcelona, though reports that the Reds are going to target Bobby Zamora with the cash are just mischief making of the highest order. Things may be bad at Liverpool, but they are not that bad.
Everton meanwhile have been linked with 17 year old Excelsior Mouscron youngster Maxime Lestienne, though his club have said that Everton can “join the queue” for his services after his performances in midfield for the Belgian side impressed several scouts from top European sides, including PSV Eindhoven, Manchester City and Anderlecht.
John Terry has pondered that he can see Chelsea spending big in the January transfer window, especially with the threat of a two year ban hanging over them come February. David Villa, Sergio Ramos and Jack Rodwell have all been linked with Chelsea in the past week but it remains to be seen if their current clubs start quoting silly money to Chelsea, safe in the knowledge that if they don’t pay it, then they won’t be able to sign them again for another 24 months.
Big news also from Old Trafford where Sir Alex Ferguson and his team have NOT been linked with another goalkeeper in the past week. This is a sore point with Halesowen Town keeper Nick Bussey who was next on the ridiculously long list to be linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Anyway here’s hoping that next weeks troll through the stories offers a little more in the way of interesting titbits of information. International weeks have a lot to answer for if you ask me.

Maybe selling Torres is the underhanded way of getting Benitez to leave
