Getting kitted out for Christmas!
Published by Ian John on November 20, 2009
Christmas is coming soon and top of many peoples Christmas lists will be a new football kit. God knows there are enough to choose from, but which ones are the most stylish? Currently in the Premier League I think all of the top teams kits are rather bland. Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United’s kit this season are nothing special. United’s in particular baffles me with that black stripe running across it. United have had some corking kits in the past, as have all those sides I mentioned, but at the moment I can’t say any of them grab me as particularly outstanding.
I do know what the worst kit in the Premier League is at the moment, and I am sorry Everton fans but yours is it. That dreadful home shirt with the long v-neck. It actually looks more retro than a genuine retro kit and the truth is when I first saw the kit out on the street, I did think it was a retro kit and was stunned to realise that the poor Everton players would be forced to wear it this season. It’s no wonder their form has suffered, it’s hard to play seriously when the opposition fans are laughing at your tops.
I can’t say that any kit of any Premier League team is particularly outstanding at the moment which is unusual. Over the years there have been some really nice looking kits but this season seems to have seen clubs opt for a more traditional look and, to my untrained sartorial eye at least, it does just look rather bland. If I had to choose a kit that I liked the look of I would probably plump for the Sunderland home kit, which I think looks half decent or the Manchester City home kit. I know, neither particularly have the ‘wow’ factor do they?
Certainly the worst kit I have seen this year is the one in the picture for this article. The Newcastle United away kit is a triumph of bad taste over common sense. What a season for Newcastle fans, relegated from the Premiership, Mike Ashley still going nowhere, Joey Barton still entering the Mr Popularity contest and to cap it all, their away kit makes them look like a confused banana. Honestly, just look at it. If you gave that to somebody for Christmas, they wouldn’t kiss you under the mistletoe, more maim you with a brick.
We need a return to the really classic tops and for that you have to really leave the Premiership and go abroad. As bad as Newcastle’s kit is it still pales in comparison to Palermo’s pink monstrosity and Borossia Dortmund’s bright day-glo yellow kit that is actually brighter than the floodlights at their stadium. Spanish sides usually have a touch of class, Real Madrid and Barcelona’s kits have always had a real touch of quality about them, I think the colours go well on them. The same can be said for little French outfit Nantes who, like Norwich, wear a mixture of yellow and green that I have always liked.
But undoubtedly the best kit, the best kit by a long way, is the old Brazilian kit of yellow tops, blue shorts and white socks. It shouldn’t look as good as it does with that combination, but there is something about it that just oozes class in whatever form it is in. For a Christmas present, you cannot go far wrong.
