The One Signing They Should Make Part Two : Seventh to Thirteenth
Published by Ian John on January 16, 2010
Continuing our three part series on the one player each Premier League team should try to sign to improve their position in the transfer window, we look at the teams currently lying between seventh and twelfth in the Premier League at present, starting with, incredibly, Liverpool.
7. LIVERPOOL : It hasn’t been the greatest of seasons for Rafa Benitez, which is a huge understatement, and with the clubs financial position still totally unclear it is hard to know where Liverpool stand. Rodriguez has already arrived and Chamakh should follow soon, but Benitez needs more than that to save his skin and the season. WHO TO SIGN : Emile Heskey (Aston Villa) There is no way Peter Crouch should have ever left Anfield as Torres needs a partner. Liverpool don’t need goals but they need an attacker to help Torres out and to build from. Heskey fits the bill well.
8. BIRMINGHAM CITY : Alex McLeish must feel like a child let loose in a sweet shop. £40m in his back pocket to spend in the window and his side on their best run of Premier League form ever, McLeish doesn’t need a radical overhaul, but perhaps just a signing or two to add depth and quality to his squad. WHO TO SIGN : Joe Hart (Manchester City) Hart is on loan at Birmingham and investing some of their money to ensure he moves full time from Manchester City would be a very shrewd move on behalf of McLeish as by the summer, Hart may be England’s first choice keeper.
9. FULHAM : Roy Hodgson has done a fantastic and often overlooked job at Fulham in the past two years. His knowledge of football across the globe, tactics and flowing passing style of football are a breath of fresh air. Hodgson will never pay the huge money for players, but he will unearth a gem or two of that you can be sure. WHO TO SIGN : Jamie O’Hara (Tottenham) With his Portsmouth loan deal set to end and no chance of staying at Fratton Park, O’Hara would be a good loan signing to provide cover down the left and in the centre of midfield.
10. STOKE CITY : Tony Pulis has been linked with several ambitious signings in the transfer window and it goes to show the intent Stoke have to build upon their excellent return to the top flight. Whether the finance is there to pay the top stars, like Van Nistelrooy, for example, is debatable but Pulis at least is aware his side needs quality in depth. WHO TO SIGN : Lukasz Podolski (Koln) He may cost a bit, but he is young, talented, scores goals and is a German international. He would be a good partner for Ricardo Fuller or James Beattie in attack.
11. SUNDERLAND : Steve Bruce has been linked with a few names coming in and a few coming out of the Stadium of Light over the course of the past few weeks. Holding on to his key players for Bruce may be just as important as adding any new ones to his Sunderland side in the transfer window. WHO TO SIGN : Guy Demel (SV Hamburg) Bruce has been strongly linked with the Ivory Coast full back in recent weeks and he would be a shrewd signing, strengthening the full back area and also adding extra cover in central defence too.
12. EVERTON : Manager David Moyes doesn’t have an awful lot of money to play about with at present, but the Everton boss will know that his threadbare squad needs new faces. Landon Donovan on loan will be a useful signing and an extra attacker to cover for the oft injured Saha, Vaughan and Yakubu would be a boon. WHO TO SIGN : Kris Boyd (Rangers) His deal runs out in June and he seems to score plenty of goals. He should be in Everton’s price range in terms of wages and the last striker they signed from Rangers was Duncan Ferguson who became a hero.
13. BLACKBURN ROVERS : It is hard to know exactly what Sam Allardyce needs during the January window. Rovers lie 13th, which isn’t bad but they have hardly set the Premier league alight this season. Well organised, physically powerful and technically proficient, Rovers just need that little extra flair and invention to push on. WHO TO SIGN : Chris Brunt (W.B.A) The Northern Ireland winger did well in the Premier League last season and with Morten Gamst Pedersen set to leave in the summer, he’d be a good acquisition to resolve that situation.
Join us tomorrow when we look at the teams in 14th-20th place in the Premier League and look at the player who they could realistically sign who could come in and save their season.
