Pearls of Wisdom from the season so far…
Published by Ian John on February 6, 2010
Pundits, players and managers eh? While every now and then you may bump into an unusually erudite, incisive and intelligent version, such as Iain Dowie, Graeme Le Saux or Pat Nevin, you can bet that you won’t have to wait long until someone with the cranial capacity of Paul “The pitch is full of White Snow” Merson to come along and ruin it all with such banal observations that you feel like jacking in watching football altogether and fancy taking up the Shot Putt for a bit of glamour and intellectual challenge. Why? Well here’s a few gems from the 2009-2010 season, complete with the resident genius who said it…
“There’s no if, buts or maybes. That was a great save but Robbie Keane should have scored.” – Andy Gray.
“He made a run in the second half. He run about 50 yards and the camera went on him and he wasn’t even breathing.” – Paul Merson speaking about Manchester United star Ryan Giggs rather worryingly.
“This team has done very well. They’ve come a long way in a short distance.” – former England boss Graham Taylor. Do I not like that.
“Carlisle 1, Southampton 1 – in the 95th minute of injury time.” Sky TV Reporter David Craig
“Manchester City look like a bag of nails. They’re all over the place.” Paul Merson
“Hodgson talks a million different languages. He even knew my language.” Paul Merson
“I think if you asked the other 19 managers who would they choose, ten would take Anelka and Drogba and ten would take Rooney and Berbatov.” – Andy Gray
“They’re playing a 4-2-3 at the moment, with Heskey up front on his own.” – Tony Cottee
“To win the group gives you a huge advantage. For a start, you get your away legs at home.” – David Platt
“There’s only one word for that – straight off the training ground.” – Alan Smith
“They’ve got this man with a heart as big as…as big as… a plate.” – Chris Kamara speaking about Carlos Tevez
“How long did he last at Bayern Munich? They were fifth or sixth in the Scottish League.” – Phil Thompson
“He felt something in his groin, so we pulled him off as soon as possible.” – Tony Pulis on defender Ryan Shawcross. No wonder he doesn’t want to leave the Potters.
“I’ve never covered a World Cup in Africa before, which isn’t surprising considering they’ve never played one there yet.” – John Motson, nothing gets past this guy.
And just think, there’s still another four months left to play…
