The Tuesday Troll… Pssst… Anybody wanna buy Portsmouth?

Published by Ian John on February 23, 2010

It’s been a while since I last had a trawl through the news bin to bring you the latest juicy titbits from the Premier League, so buoyed with fresh enthusiasm after witnessing the fine spectactle that was the Manchester City – Liverpool clash at the weekend (second only to anaesthesia for putting you to sleep) I’m back with an amble through the gold lined and diamond encrusted streets of the Premier League.

Odd then I start with the the paupers of the piece. Portsmouth are going to get a new owner, their fifth this season. Who this is however, remains typically embroiled in fiasco. With a winding up order set to be heard against the club on Monday, the timing could not really have come at a worse time. In effect the current owner is admitting that he cannot resolve the debt situation at the club, specifically the money owed to HMRC, by the Monday deadline. Administration looms despite reports that there are several people interested in buying the club.

Ashley Cole looks like he may have bonked himself a move out of Chelsea. Ashley isn’t content with speeding charges and sending rude pictures via mobile phones anymore, not when he can sneak girls into the team hotel before away games, lie to a member of the senior management staff of the club about it and then have a fling with an American girl while the club were on a pre-season tour of the United States last summer. Honestly, between him and John Terry it’s a wonder half of London don’t share the same DNA. Still the one good thing out of this is that his wife Cheryl has seemingly given him the elbow, via text message. All this coming after Roman Abramovich had instructed his players to stop dragging the name of Chelsea through the mud with their off field philanderings. Real Madrid and Barcelona are ready to pounce at the end of season according to reports, should Chelsea decide to get rid of the lusty left back.

Craig Bellamy and Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini have reportedly had a bust up. Now there is a surprise eh? It seems Bellamy has a bust up with pretty much any manager he has had who isn’t called Mark Hughes. Apparently an uneasy truce has been called, but I don’t imagine it will be too long before Bellamy follows Robinho out of Eastlands, which is a shame because for a large part of this season and despite the massive investment in foreign talent, Bellamy has been City’s best player.

Everton boss David Moyes has refuted suggestions his club would have to sell Jack Rodwell should any of the big clubs come in for him. Moyes feels the blues are in a better position nowadays to fend of interest in their star men, than when Manchester United came in for Wayne Rooney a few years ago. That may well be true in terms of status in the Premier League, but it is hard to believe that Everton could turn down a £20m bid for the midfielder should it come. Poor old Bill Kenwright isn’t flushed with Tesco cash now that the new ground isn’t being built, so it will have to come from somewhere. Still, if they manage to play like they did against Manchester United at the weekend, then it may well come from the Champions league.

Did anyone see the state of the ploughed field that Wigan call a home ground? Seriously, I bet half the players didn’t know whether to kick the ball or start sowing seeds. Never mind wasting money on players like Jason Scotland, a striker so far out of his depth that most fans feel a sense of pity for him, it may well be worth investing a bit in the pitch. Especially if your manager is a fan of free flowing football. Just a thought.

Lastly my favourite quote of the week came from a Liverpool fan who stated on a fan board “There’s not been much to cheer this season…” Much? I’d venture there hasn’t been anything to cheer this season. What are we to enthuse about? The Europa League? A humiliating FA Cup defeat? Awful league and champions league form? Martin Skrtel’s strange chin? We’ve managed to keep hold of Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard? They are small pickings for a side that were expected to be challenging for the very top honours this season.

Anyway, I’m off to get a paternity test done on the kids. I remember Chelsea played a game close by a few years back and I just want to be sure…
