On The Up and Falling Down… EPL Players Who’s Stock is Soaring and falling…
Published by Ian John on March 25, 2010
Over the past few weeks and months there are a few Premier League players who have seen their stock rise, and an equal number who have seen their value fall. Let’s take a look at the players hitting the headlines for the right, and wrong, reasons…
Roman Pavlyuchenko (Tottenham Hotspur) : The Russian striker seems to have put his feud with Harry Redknapp behind him and has begun to score goals. Nine in his last eight games to be accurate. He’s beginning to look much more like the “new Shevchenko” as opposed to the “old Rebrov” and this return to form could well have saved his Spurs career and catapulted the North London club into the Semi Finals of the FA Cup and Fourth Place in the Champions League. Now he just needs to do this over the course of a season…
John Terry (Chelsea) : Ignoring his private life, is anyone else amazed by the lack of form shown by the former England skipper? Several times I have watched Chelsea in recent months and in each game I have found fault with several aspects of his game. Allied to that was his rather pathetic dummy spitting during and following the Inter Milan defeat, where he stated Chelsea had been outdone by poor officials. No they hadn’t John. They’d been beaten by the better team over two legs and you played your part in that with Inter’s first goal in the first leg.
Bobby Zamora (Fulham) : While I am not yet convinced that Zamora is ready for England and the World Cup, his performances for Fulham have been excellent over the course of the season and he deserves, at least, a chance to show what he can do in one of the warm up games. I’m not sure Capello will be inclined to take the striker to the finals, but he is at least worth a look given that the Italian is giving serious consideration to taking Emile Heskey.
Fernando Torres (Liverpool) : He may have scored a couple of goals of late, but ‘Nando isn’t a happy bunny. Booked five times in the last seven games, he spent most of the match at Old Trafford running around, berating the referee and acting like a petulant schoolboy. He looks frustrated and with Liverpool’s season it isn’t difficult to understand why. One would hope that would serve as a warning to Rafa that all is not well with his star striker, though given the insular nature of the Liverpool manager, it is doubtful.
Kevin Doyle (Wolves) : He didn’t find his feet in the Premier League the first time around with Reading, but with Wolves his second bite at the cherry has been far better. He is the focal point of Mick McCarthy’s side and has shown huge improvement in his ability to hold up the ball, hold off defenders and retain possession, as well as improving his strike rate in front of goal. I’d go so far as to say that if he were English, Fabio would be certainly keen on him. He does what Emile Heskey does and scores goals.
Mikel Arteta (Everton) : It’s no surprise that Everton have found much better form in recent weeks and the fact that Mikel Arteta has returned to the team has played a big part in that. The Spanish midfielder is one of the most cultured players in the Premier League and he is always a huge asset to Everton with his creativity and goal threat. Blues fans will be hoping that Arteta can steer clear of injury to play a much bigger part in the clubs season next time around.
