The EPL latest…

Published by Ian John on October 6, 2010

It’s difficult to catalogue the major news in the EPL over the past few days individually, so here is a quick round up of what’s been happening in the world of the Premier League.

Roberto Mancini and Carlos Tevez have had a spat, at half time in the game with Newcastle to be precise. The Argentinean criticised Mancini’s negative tactics which led to a war of words between the pair and the relationship is said to be ‘uneasy’. That coming in a game where Nigel De Jong, once again, clattered into an opponent dangerously. Xabi Alonso was lucky in the World Cup Final, Hatem Ben Arfa was not so lucky and received a double fracture to his leg and will be out for several months. The tackle so incensed Holland boss Bert Van Marwijk he dropped De Jong from his Dutch squad.

Another shocking tackle came at the DW Stadium where Wigan’s Jordi Gomez was brutally scythed down by, Karl Henry, who has already been in trouble because of his terrible tackling this season. Henry was sent off and Wigan prevailed 2-0, but the sooner the FA clamp down on these form of players the better.

I seldom agree with Arsene Wenger, but I think he has a point when he says that a few players in this league are less concerned with making a clean tackle, and more concerned with making an impact on a foreign player.

It’s been a strange week for Liverpool. Defeat at Anfield by Blackpool was just the start of it as the club accepted a takeover bid on Tuesday night from New England Sports Ventures. Only for the clubs owners to decide they didn’t like the bid, reject it and try to oust Christian Purslow and Ian Ayre from the board to install two of their own lackeys to ensure they can scupper the deal.

The reason Hicks and Gillett don’t want the deal is quite simple. Money and greed. They feel the deal, which in effect just pays off the clubs debt, doesn’t give them enough reward for the ‘significant investment’ they have made in the club. The deal is pending legal proceedings that have been brought by the owners to stall the sale, meaning the club is, once again in limbo and with these court proceedings likely to take months, rather than weeks, any quick resolution looks improbable.

Tottenham fans may be interested to hear that Roman Pavlyuchenko doesn’t want to leave the club any more. The work he did with his psychologist last year must have helped change his mind somewhat.

England called up Kevin Davies of Bolton to the national squad for the first time. The Bolton striker was called in after injuries robbed England of Bobby Zamora, Carlton Cole and Emile Heskey refused to come out of retirement. Just reading that sentence makes me somewhat depressed.

Sven Goran Eriksson has taken over at Leicester City in the Championship. It is a long way from the Ivory Coast and he has been promised a ‘war chest’ to spend in January. Some lucky secretary at the Walkers Stadium is in for a treat then isn’t she?
