Good Deal? Bad Deal? A new look at recent EPL transfer speculation…
Published by Ian John on October 20, 2010
Bad Deal… so Wayne Rooney is on his way from Old Trafford according to those ‘in the know’. Nonsense. Rooney’s digging his heels in over a new contract despite the fact he is out of form and United really cannot afford to pay. However what Rooney does know is that United cannot afford to lose him either. The press have seized upon this as evidence Rooney will be sold in January. More likely a lesser light will be offloaded or persuaded to retire and the money ‘saved’ will go towards satisfying Rooney’s agents demands for more money. Barcelona, Real Madrid (who have since ruled themselves out of a move), Chelsea and Manchester City all want the player according to the press. Linked in with this story is the news that Sir Alex Ferguson wants Wesley Sneijder and Luka Modric at Old Trafford, both would be good moves but not if their arrival comes at the expense of Wayne Rooney, which it will not.
Good Move… Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier has a penchant for buying useless French based players. He who gave Liverpool fans the mercurial talents (?) of El Hadji Diouf, Djibril Cisse, Alou Diarra, Salif Diao and best of all Bruno Cheyrou and Djimi Traore, now wants Lille ace Gervinho, he of the oddest haircut in football, at Aston Villa. Fortunately for Villa fans, Gervinho looks the finished article and could well be a shrewd purchase if Gerard backs up his initial interest.
Good Move… Arsenal, it is claimed, want a goalkeeper. Or rather their fans do. Fulham’s Mark Schwarzer is still being mooted but Arsene remains coy about the whole thing, kicking his heels and glancing shyly over his shoulder at fans. Manchester United also want a goalkeeper, having decided that angular Edwin Van Der Sar may be a tad too old next season when he can look forward to his free bus pass dropping through the letter box. Manuel Neuer and a host of other names have been mooted but, as yet, nothing has been confirmed.
Good Move… I have always admired Tuncay as a player. With his straggly hair, gifted feet and intelligent play, he was always an odd fit at Stoke and so it has transpired. Galatasaray and West Brom both want the Turkish striker and may offer him a route out in January.
Bad Move… The firesale is on at Anfield! Grab a bargain now! Buy One Get One Free special offer! Chelsea or Man City can Buy Fernando Torres for £25m and get David N’Gog, free!, Juventus or Real Madrid want to buy Glen Johnson for £20m, get any one of a group in ineffective international midfielders of limited attacking scope, free! Buy Liverpool FC and get tonked by Everton in the derby game at the weekend, Free! Of course, when new owners come in and the team is struggling, the best way to endear themselves to their new fans is to sell off their best players immediately…
Good Move… Wolfsburg and Bayern Munich want Johnny Heitinga, one of the group of ‘defensive midfielders’ who are ‘really valuable’ to a team but don’t actually do a lot (see Lucas Leiva, Momo Sissoko, John Obi Mikkel, Owen Hargreaves etc for further evidence). Everton would get £6m for their Dutchman who has spent the best part of the week trying to allure the German sides into making a bid.
And in brief…
Shay Given is being linked with a move to Celtic, a loan or permanent switch seems possible in January depending on whether Neil Lennon can stump up the cash Man City will want. Tottenham are keeping tabs on Sevilla striker Luis Fabiano. Liverpool and Everton are both keen on Newcastle’s out of favour and odt-injured centre back Steven Taylor, presumably to keep Phil Jagielka and Daniel Agger’s spirits up on the treatment table. Emmanuel Adebayor could be on his way out at Manchester City after failing to impress Roberto Mancini, Roma seems a possible destination according to some, although Inter Milan have also been mooted as they haven’t got enough stroppy African players like Samuel Eto’o and Sulley Muntari. Many clubs are interested in Dutch striker Ricky Van Wolfswinkel. Such a great name and likely one to inspire other clubs to make similar signings, so don’t be surprised to see Arsenal linked with a move for Ruud Van BadgerTadger any time soon.
