Some Names to Watch in the Future

Published by Ian John on January 12, 2011

While most of the big transfer news in the window will feature on deals like Manchester City signing Edin Dzeko, or Arsenal and Chelsea’s pursuit of German international defender Per Mertesecker, there are a few deals in the offing for some players who are not yet Premier League household names but who, in the next few years, could well be. In this article, we take a look at some players both in and out of the EPL who could be making a name for themselves on a bigger stage at some point in the future.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Southampton) – Arguably the biggest teenage target in British soccer at present. Arsenal and Liverpool are believed to be leading the chase for Southampton’s £10m rated teenage attacking midfielder. Rated by scouts as being better than Theo Walcott at the same age, Oxlade-Chamberlain could well be joining one of the Premier League elite clubs in January. Or Liverpool.

Adam Lallana (Southampton) – There must be something going right at the Southampton youth academy. In recent years the likes of Alan Shearer, Gareth Bale and Theo Walcott have all come through the ranks and now there is Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Saints midfielder Adam Lallana, whose industry, skill on the ball and goalscoring exploits in league one have seen him catch the eye of several Premier League sides.

Dale Jennings (Tranmere Rovers) – He’s 17, still got a lot to learn and not involved in games enough, but without question Dale Jennings is the brightest prospect Tranmere have had for years. His performances, not to mention breathtaking solo goals, have seen him attract scouts already from Premier league sides like Everton, Sunderland, West Brom and Aston Villa. It’s unlikely Jennings will move just yet, he is still too raw, but in a few years if he continues to progress the EPL beckons.

Romelu Lukaku (Anderlecht) – Another 17 year old but one with immense talent and already one of European footballs hottest prospects. Has netted 24 goals in just over 50 games for Anderlecht and is being linked with a host of top clubs from around Europe, including Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Inter, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Josh McEachran (Chelsea) – The youngster is very highly regarded at Stamford Bridge and has been eased into the first team picture by coach Ancelotti in recent months. Likened by those on the Chelsea staff who have watched him closely to former Arsenal schemer Liam Brady, McEachran possesses a sweet left foot and great vision and touch on the ball that have marked him out ahead of his peers.

Lucas Piazon (Sao Paolo) – He’s only 15 but already there is talk of new Inter Milan boss Leonardo wanting to snap him up ahead of Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea. Piazon has been outstanding for the Brazil u15 team in recent championships and has been likened to Brazilian international midfielder Kaka.

Ravel Morrison (Manchester United) – They have high hopes for Morrison at Old Trafford and have already introduced him into the first team picture during the course of this season as a substitute on occasion. A talented midfielder of vision and creativity, no doubt he will go on loan at some point to gain some valuable experience but he has the talent to make the grade, even in the rarified atmosphere of Old Trafford.
