Quotes of the Week: Liverpool Will Spend in the Summer, Rooney’s Snarl and Jose’s Refreshing Honesty

Published by Ian John on April 9, 2011

“Peter should have controlled himself better having already been booked. We had one team completely stuck at the back without any chance of responding. The game could have been completely different and it’s a bit sad as I prefer authentic football matches.” - Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho is candidly accurate about the 4-0 defeat of Tottenham at the Bernebeu.

After being charged by the Football Association with using insulting or offensive language Rooney this morning is marooned, a sad millionaire with ever-nodding pals and a shredded sense of right and wrong.

Probably the last time he smiled was when watching the TV bulletins, as former players and other apologists parroted unconvincing defences on his behalf. The PFA chairman, Clarke Carlisle, who plays for Burnley, called Rooney’s “what fuckin’ what?” the “inadvertent use of a profanity”. Gary Pallister, who spent nine years under Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, hoped, “commonsense prevails and no further action is taken”. Sadly for Rooney, no. He has until Wednesday to accept a two-match ban that would keep him out of the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City…

…I don’t know Rooney. But outside the bosom of his family and friends – not to mention those in a couple of backstreet knocking shops – neither does anyone else. He is a product of the modern sports entertainment machine, a player so remote that, when Sky had the chance to ask him why he had behaved like a spoilt child, they bottled it.” - Kevin Mitchell’s blog on the Rooney swearing incident.

There will be movement, that’s for sure. We are very attractive for a lot of players because of what we did in January and a game like that [the 3-1 defeat of Manchester United] is fantastic publicity for us around the world. Since the day after I was getting phone calls from agents telling me that their player would love to come and that we are going to compete next year if we get it right. We are attractive to a lot of top players and we want to bring top players to this club.” – Liverpool’s Director of Football Damian Comolli on Liverpool’s plans for the summer.

And this little beauty is my favourite quote of the week from a Spurs fan after the Champions League defeat… Who says football fans lack perspective eh? It’s a long read and I have not corrected the speelung mistooks and grammatical errors, but its well worth it for the humour value alone:

“Myths Perpetuated by Spurs fans (except me and a few sensible ones)

1/VDV (Van Der Vaart) is class.

Reality: He’s been pathetic for 3 months. Unbelievably slow. Like Defoe, contributes nothing if he doesnt score. Another woeful performance tonight. Cant pass, cant run, and incredibly slow in everything he does. One thing he’s lighting quick at though – complaining to the ref. We have our new Keane.

2/ Spurs have great strength in debt. (NB : Think he means ‘depth’ but you never know)
Reality: We’ve an awful bench. Nothing there to impact a game. No pace, no technique, no heart. Daswon (Dawson), Gallas, Ekotto, Modric, Bale and Lennon are the only top class players we have in a 25 man squad.

3/Krancjar (Kranjcar) playing would solve everything.

Reality: Refer to point 1. No pace, contributes nothing he doesnt score. In fact, probably the slowest player in the league.

4/Defoe is “jus going through a bad spell”

Reality: Wont dignify this with a response. Except to say his re-signing is probably the worst thing to happen to ever the club. (Hmmm. I can remember Spurs signing Sergei Rebrov and Paolo Tramezzani – so that is a pretty big statement!)

4/ Pav is our best striker

Reality: Just watch the games, he’s dreadful.

5/Redknapp is fantastic in the transfer market.

Reality: He’s made mistake after mistake. 40m on Defoe, Keane and Palacios. Commoli spent less on Bale, Ekotto and Modric. I badly badly miss him. Fantastic in the transfer market (ya got the odd one wrong but we would make a massive profit if we sold his players). Gallas though was an obvious signing which he got right. We need a Director of Football in the summer.
And why does Redknapp constantly say “I dont know if we’ve bid for him, thats up to the chairman” as if it has nothing whatsoever to do with him?

We’ve missed a once in a generation chance to cement ourselves in top 4 in place of a weakening Liverpool. We needed to sign strikers, and we didnt. Its back to being a mid table club I fear.

Perspective eh? Some people’s glasses are never half full…
